Re: The Truth About Cigar Gadgets

By Jesse | April 11, 2007

Patrick at the Stogie Guys has a post about the insane cigar gadgets that are competing against cigars for the cigar smokers hard earned cash.

I tend do agree with him but I think there are a few things every cigar smoker should have.

A good cutter:

I myself have a Palio, but I’d be happy with a Xikar or something even cheaper. I’ve tried using my Palio Cigar Cutterfingernails and even biting the end off but I don’t like the way I end up destroying the cigar.

A Humidor:

If you plan to have any amount of cigars around the house for any time long periods of time get yourself a humidor. I’d suggest finding a place online as most local cigar shops tend to mark these up quite a bit. Until you know for sure you want to keep cigars at home just pick up an airtight plastic container from a grocery store and put a humidification pack in it. I like the Boveda packs because they are fairly easy to monitor until you get a more complicated setup.

An Ashtray:

Depends on where you smoke really. I’ve got three for free by just attending different cigar events over the years.

A Lighter:

I had a $60 lighter that lasted six months and a $16 lighter that lasted my for 3 years. I’ve even used a disposable when I misplace my torch lighter. Heck I’ve even used a torch! I do recommend a butane lighter and not a fuel lighter like a Zippo because the fumes can change the taste of the cigar. I use a Firebird myself.

A Travel Humidor:

You’re right: There are a few things every cigar enthusiast must have. Among those are a cutter, an ashtray, and a humidor.

I think my colleague’s main point is that getting caught up in unnecessary gadgets is as detrimental as it is expensive.

Never used a Palio, but heard good things about them. I just use my Xikar cutter. Reliable and gets the job done. Lighter I also use a Xikar Lighter. I do have a Rocky Patel table torch lighter for when I misplace my Xikar. Stinky ashtray a must for cigar smokers. I love it.

I agree with him there, heck at times I’ve even been caught up in that gotta have it gadget mania.
