Vermouth: Your thoughts? and My Martini

by Jesse on April 19, 2007

Martini with OliveAbout: Cocktails asks a very interesting question and gives us a list of drinks that just wouldn’t be worth a damn without Vermouth.

My Martini:

  • 1/2 oz Dry Vermouth
  • 2 1/2 oz Gin (Beefeater is my current choice)
  • 2 Bleu Cheese stuffed Olives
  • Chilled Martini Glass

Add vermouth and gin to a tumbler full of ice and stir. Do not shake! Strain into the chilled Martini glass and add olives as garnish with maybe just a splash of the brine if you so desire. Repeat as needed.

Nice martini. Love the glass. Gave a set of 6 just like that from the Swank website to my wife for Christmas. In return she has brought me back from the lemon twist to olives. Her olives are similar to yours but she uses gorganzola cheese instead of blue. The gorgonzola holds up a little better in the drink and the taste is quite similar. Beefeaters is our standard gin but, when we want to go wild, we drink Bombay Sapphire. I prefer my martinis 1o parts gin to 1 part vermouth and very cold. We make up a small pitcher in advance and put it in the freezer along with the glasses. That way we can serve them cold and very dry. I prefer white liquors in spring/summer and switch to browns for fall/winter.

I just finished off my bottle of scotch last night. Probably will wait till fall to get anymore. I like Beefeater, but if it wasn’t for the free glasses it came with I would have stuck with Gilbey’s which is my usual gin. It is about $6 cheaper a bottle and I really don’t notice much of a difference.

People make martinis way too complicated. It’s very easy, as my mother taught me:

Ice
Glass
Gin

Mix the first & last in the middle item, then drink.
The preferred gin for me is Fleischmans, which is very drinkable, cheap, and available. Hendricks is very good, but way expensive.
