Carlos Torano Casa Torano Robusto Cigar Review
By Jesse | May 7, 2007 |
Cigar #2 in my journey through Torano cigars is the Casa Torano Robusto. The Casa Torano is a milder cigar with blended filler from several countries, a Nicaraguan binder and a Ecuadorian Shade Grown Connecticut Seed wrapper. This cigar was the house blend of Torano only given out at Torano sponsored events until it was released to the public at the RTDA in 2004.
The construction of this cigar is excellent, but as with with most shade grown tobacco the wrapper feels a bit fragile. The draw is a little easy but not undesirably so. The burn was perfect and evened itself out even though my lighting of the cigar wasn’t the best.
I’m not a huge fan of mild cigars but this is one I like. Once it warms up it is very complex with a solid nutty foundation and a leathery aftertaste. It does have some sweeter undertones that balance the flavor profile nicely. I really like this cigar in the morning with a cup of coffee as it isn’t overpowering. My only problem is that it does get a touch bitter if you rush it. Also a couple I had tend to start tasting like paper when the burn starts until they warm up.
When I had the room I used to keep a box of these cigars on hand at all times. A box of these will run you about $80 to $90 for 25. This is one of the better mild cigars on the market and well worth the price even if you do not typically like mild cigars. Rating 8 out of 10.

[...] The unlit draw had a faint tangy leather taste, which I found appealing. After picking up my Saturday morning cup of Joe at Dunkin Donuts I pulled over in the parking lot to light it up. On the first few draws of the cigar I picked up a flavor and aroma that reminded me of buttered popcorn, which smoothed out into a profile of roasted nuts and leather. The hardest flavor I had identifying was a sweeter spice with very subtle hints of licorice and clove. I’m going to have to smoke a few more to really pin these flavors down, but next time I plan to let these sit in my humidor a bit longer prior to smoking them. I did have some burn issues with these cigars and had to touch them up quite a bit, and had them go out on me a couple times as well. The burn issues led to a flaky ash that otherwise would have held on quite well. Verdict: A good mild cigar with a complex flavor profile. If you enjoy a mild cigar don’t hesitate picking these up. The price is a little high for my taste and that prevents this from becoming more than an occasional smoke for me. I’m also a bit put off by the issues I had with the burn. A bad burn can ruin the flavor profile if you have to constantly touch it up or relight it. Similar Cigars: A couple other nice mild and cheaper cigars are the Chateau Real and the Casa Torano. [...]
