The State of No-hio

by Jesse on July 24, 2007

Peter Bronson has a great article on Anthony’s Cigar Bar & Grille. The article has some great information on what the smoking ban is doing to business in Cincinnati and some great quotes.

Something is missing on the sign over Greg Varacalli’s business in the Voice of America Center in West Chester. “Anthony’s (empty space) Bar and Grille,” it reads. You can see the outline of the missing letters that spelled “Cigar.”

Welcome to No-hio – where any anonymous complaint about a puff of smoke can start a bonfire of fines, inspections and government penalties.

No wonder Varacalli is hotter than the business end of a lit Macanudo. The state’s smoking ban has outlawed his business like a contraband Cuban cigar.

I left No-ohio many years ago for many, many reasons. Their legislative tendencies being one. And, now that I’m settled in Houston, whose smoking ban just went into affect this past weekend, I’m wondering how far down Ohio’s road we’ll go.

The solution is simple. Take down the sign. Your customers will not report you will they? If the Gestapo comes around just post the sign again. The first violation only gets you a warning letter. If they never come around you are home free.
