Keepers of the Flame contacted EO Cigars to find out the story behind the number "601":
I was checking out the EO Cigars Website a few days ago, and after escaping the clutches of the sirens who grace the front page I discovered their “blog” section, which is really more of a place to post comments and questions. Eddie Ortega was kind enough to answer a question I posed about the origin of the “601? name for this series of cigars. I was thinking maybe it was a birthdate, or part of an meaningful address, something like that, but it turns out that 601 was the date that Eddie and Erik first went to visit Pepin’s factory in Nicaragua.
The EO 601 Habano is a Nicaraguan Puro with a Nicaraguan Habano wrapper. All the 601's are rolled in "Don Pepin" Garcia's factory in Nicaragua, including a Connecticut and a Maduro blend.
I've mentioned in the past that a couple of the "Don Pepin" Garcia Blue Labels I smoked seemed to be bit soft or the wrapper split. The 601 Habano was a different story. This oily rosado colored cigar has a firm solid construction and the cigar itself had a sweet spicy scent reminding me of molasses. My tongue tingled with the hint of peppercorns as I tested the excellent draw of the cigar.
Along with not requiring any touch ups, this torpedo did not bulge or split, lit well, burned evenly, and produced a nice cloud of white smoke. Earthen and pepper flavors are a constant theme in most of the Pepin blends I've smoked. This balanced out well with the molasses flavor which came out stronger as the cigar warmed up. The EO 601 Habano is definitely a sweeter cigar with some subtle nutmeg and rum flavors behind the molasses, earth and pepper.
I hate to admit it but I'm turning into a bit of a Pepin fanboy. I've overlooked construction issues in the past, because the flavor is fantastic. The 601 did not have any flaws and really hit a home run. The flavor didn't really seem to change at all throughout the cigar but the constant tone it had was superb. Stronger than I prefer this cigar made me a bit light headed, so keep this in mind when you pick it up. The EO 601 Habano is a fantastic cigar for that lazy Sunday afternoon. Rating 9 out of 10.

Hello Jesse,
I am glad to find a real active site/blog about cigars. I am currently working on my own cigar reviews project, would you like to exchange blogroll links? I know that my website is not extremely popular at the moment, but I’m sure it will be :)
Looking forward to hearing from you soon, Denis
