Note from Jesse(Cigar Jack): I'd like to welcome Patrick as our newest reviewer. Patrick's rating system is a bit different than my own, but I think you'll enjoy his reviews as much as I do.
I really enjoy smoking cigars…in addition to smoking them, I also enjoy evaluating, classifying, dissecting and describing the good and not so good for any cigar I can ever get my hands upon. Sometimes I tend to obsess, in fact I’ll chatter on endlessly extolling what I find so enchanting and cursing what is so contemptible. Regardless, this is my first official review and I figure I’d start off with one of the pleasures from the treasures offered by Tabacalera Perdomo, the Perdomo Reserve Maduro. I was gifted this particular cigar by my wife for Fathers Day, as part of a sampler pack and sized up at the 7 x 54 variety…a size that required dedication offered only during those long Saturdays with nothing to do but breathe, drink beer, turn up the music and introduce whole chickens to half-full beer cans on the grill.
In respect to appearance and construction, this was an exceptional cigar from head to foot; firm, nothing loose or knotty, with a substantial leathery cap that was made for a cigar punch. For me, cutting this cigar would be a crime…the exterior looked like an ancient book covered with a luxuriously taut leather binding. Prior to lighting, the cigar emanated a nearly neutral essence, with the barest perception of aged spices, cocoa and a very faint nuttiness.
According to Perdomo, this cigar comes from Nicaragua, and offers a “fermented ebony-hued Maduro leaf yielding a rich and flavorful smoking experience with a pleasant cocoa aroma and a long, satisfying finish.” See the website for further information.
For me, this cigar virtually ran the gamut of sweet and spicy, flaring between spun sugar, vaporized cocoa, spice, and a faint spruce/light woody flavor…an intense blend of aromas/tastes that became more vivid as the end came to a close. This cigar was so good, I’d venture to say it was one of the best cigars I have had in over six months.
To sum it up, this cigar was a finger-burner of the highest degree, almost warranting use of my BBQ tongs to afford me one or two more draws. In my own rating system (I personally avoid numbers when I can), this is one cigar that I would go 50 miles out of my way, in the snow, with broken wipers and one headlight, just to get my cigar meters on a gem like this. Until next time, as my wife says, “Smile when you meet someone you don’t know…you just may get a free cigar.”
