Description: I met Sondra from Ash Cigar Co. at the RTDA Trade Show and after talking for a few minutes she led me over to meet Sean Williams of El Primer Mundo Cigars. Sean had the same dream most of us cigar smokers have had to go from cigar smoker to making our own cigar line. El Primer Mundo Cigars are rolled in Nestor Plasencia’s factory in Esteli, Nicaragua. I was intrigued and decided to make this one of the first cigars I tried when I got back home.

It is a lazy Saturday morning about a week after the show. We’ve finally had a slight break from the heat wave so I used the opportunity to try the Connecticut Shade Robusto. The cigar is beautifully box pressed with finely veined wrapper that feels smooth and soft to the touch. It was consistent and didn’t have any strange soft or hard spots. Unlit the cigar had a faint floral and cedar aroma. Once lit the cigar started off with a strong cedar flavor and bit of leather. At the 1/3 mark it picked up in creaminess and reminded me of a cup of coffee with heavy cream, sugar and a touch of cinnamon. The cigar really took me by surprise in strength, leaving me with a decent buzz. The ash was a dark gray color and a bit flaky, but need a decent tap to be shaken loose. I was impressed by the burn which stayed even throughout most of the cigar.

Verdict: I am impressed and would pick up a box. This cigar would be an enjoyable cigar for just about everyone. It does have some strength in it so I would recommend it not be smoked on an empty stomach. I haven’t been able to locate an online retailer that carries these cigars, but El Primer Mundo does have several retailers listed on their site that carry their line.

Similar Cigars: The Casa Torano, and the Carlos Torano Reserva Selecta Connecticut both from Carlos Torano come close in flavor. I think the closest to this flavor profile with the creaminess is the La Tradicion Cubana.
