Cusano P1 Robusto Cigar Review

By Jesse | August 22, 2007

Brand: Cusano CigarsCusano P1 Cigar
Line: P1 Bundle
Vitola: Robusto
Origin: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro
Filler: Dominican
Body: Medium
Strength: Mild-Medium
Box Price: $50.00 (Bundle of 20)

Description: The P1 is one of Cusano’s bundle cigars. Made with the same tobacco as some of their premium cigars, it has a mix of short and long filler. The Connecticut Maduro Broadleaf wrapper is veiny which gives the cigar a bit of a rough look. It may not be the prettiest stogie, and it’s a little softer than I like, but the overall construction isn’t bad.

Cusano’s website states this cigar is rich and sweet and I think they were pretty much right on the money with that. The Cusano P1 has a nice, sweet flavor with some pepper that steadily grows stronger but never to the point of overbearing. I also tasted a bit of a nutty flavor in the cigar that would crop up every once in awhile. Because of the looser draw, the cigar is easy to smoke fast, and itends to get harsher and a little unpleasant near the end.

Verdict: I found this cigar enjoyable and a decent smoke for the price. I would probably keep a few on hand for the times when I’m can’t really sit down and savor a cigar. It would not be a bad smoke for yard work, on the golf course or that all night pub crawl.

Similar Cigars: If you want to stay in this price range, try the Flor de Oliva Bundles. I would probably drop a few more dollars and get the Sabor Cubano though. Some of the retailer sites say the P1 is a cheaper alternative to Partagas or Punch Cigars from General Cigar. I’ve got a Punch in my humidor so I’ll let you know how they compare.

I liked the P1 as well, nice flavor, nice price. Actually, I found something to enjoy in each of Cusano’s bundle cigars. Unless I’m mistaken, these are made at Tabacos Dominicanos, under Hendrik Kelner’s supervision.

These aren’t bad but for the price I think the Flor de Olivas are a better deal.
