Description: Avalon Cigars are rolled in Miami’s Calle Ocho District and aged in the Cradle of the Blues, Clarksdale Mississippi. Their premium cigars are aged by propiertary process with locally grown green pecan wood. The Pinetop Perkins is named after Legendary Blues Pianist Joe Willie Perkins. Pinetop Perkins got his nickname from the song “Pinetop Boogie Woogie which was actually written by Pinetop Smith (Wikipedia).

The Pinetop Perkins Torpedo features a beautiful smooth Cameroon wrapper with few minor veins. The cigar had a nice firm construction, with the only flaw being a small crack in the wrapper near the band. This crack, fortunately, posed no issue while I smoked. I was surprised to find the draw to be very easy even with the heft the cigar had.

Immediately upon lighting up, the signature pecan flavor was evident along with that familiar pepper kick of ligero leaf. The woody pecan and spicy black pepper were the two major flavors through out the cigar. The sweeter spice of the Cameroon played more of a background note that picked up more in the last half, but was still very subtle compared to the other flavors. I also picked out some leather through the last two thirds that mellowed out some of the pepper and woodiness.

Verdict: Overall this was a great cigar, but it is not what I’d consider your typical Cameroon, which tend to be milder in strength and body. It reminded me more of a cigar with a Sun Grown Wrapper with hints of the Cameroon Spice.

Similar Cigars: Honestly this is a hard cigar to compare. If you want something with a bit more Cameroon flavor and still have the Pecan flavor try the Honeyboy Edwards which is another favorite I have from Avalon Cigars. Try the Oliva Serie V if you like the Sun Grown flavor.
