Description: This is the last of the EO 601’s that I have to review. This is the unique cigar out of the 601 line as it is the only one that is not a Nicaraguan Puro. The 601 Black, uses an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper which tones down the body and strength compared to the rest of the EO 601 line.

I feel like I’m repeating myself, but this cigar is just as well made as the rest of the 601’s. The wrapper is a nice light brown and finely veined, and it has a nice firm, heavy feel to it. The Connecticut wrapper is a bit more fragile so handle these with care as I dropped this one and the wrapper did split a bit at the foot. Once cut the cigar had a nice pepper and leather flavor with a light resistance on the draw.

Definitely not as mild as your typical Connecticut Shade Wrapper cigar, this cigar has a strong pepper kick and strength you find in most Pepin Garcia blended cigars. While the aroma of cracked pepper made up most of the flavor profile, the secondary notes changed throughout the cigar. At first I picked up some strong hints of leather which changed to hints of butter and almonds about a third of the way into the cigar. A woody cedar combined with the pepper in the final third for a nice finish.

Verdict: When I walk into the humidor at my local shop, I have to stand in front of the EO 601’s for 20 minutes trying to decide which ones to buy. All four are a must have cigar. If you haven’t tried an EO 601 yet I want you to pick some up as part of your next trip and let me know what you think.

Similar Cigars: This smoke is too full flavored to compare to the milder Casa Torano or Chateau Real, which also have the Ecuadorian Connecticut Wrappers. If you like it stick with the Red, Green & Blue EO 601’s.

When I first tried this cigar I kind of hoped it would prove to be a slightly cheaper and easier to find version of the Cabiguan. Alas, it wasn’t to be. It is a good cigar in it’s own right but didn’t quite match up to the Cabiguan. I’ve only had the Red, Black, and Blue in the 601 line so far. All good cigars but the Red has been my favorite by far. Your reviews of the 601’s have been great and have me looking forward to tasting the rest of the rainbow. :)

I haven’t had the chance to try the Cabiguan yet. Now you have me interested. Are you trying to make me max out my cigar budget in 1st week of the month? :)

Another great review on the 601 line, Jesse. They’re all great cigars. I’m not a big Connecticut fan, but I do like these. They definitely have more kick than most Connecticut wrapped cigars have.
