Description: I’d seen Dona Flor Cigars mentioned on a few of the cigar boards, but didn’t pay much attention to them until I stopped by their booth at the 2007 RTDA Cigar Show. The company has over 25 years experience in the industry but have only just recently began selling their cigars outside of Brazil.
The first thing you’ll notice about the Dona Flor cigars is that, while they are well constructed, they are a bit softer than your typical cigar. This is intentional as it allows the cigar to bring out some of its more subtle flavors. The wrapper was a nice chocolate color with some larger veins in it. I chose to use a punch cutter on these cigars because of the looser roll and draw.
The Alonso Menendez starts with an earthy and peppercorn flavors even on the first few draws. Getting about an inch into the cigar some of the pepper goes away, mellowing it out into more of a cedar profile. I picked up a hint of sweetness and floral tones about half way through the smoke along with a bit of a chocolate flavor. The cigar does burn quick because of the looser roll so it won’t take you as long as your typical robusto, but the burn is even and the ash holds on well.
Verdict: This Dona Flor Alonso Menendez Series has a unique flavor profile with a spicy kick to it. I really enjoy this cigar as a change of pace and the spicy flavor would pair well, in my opinion, with flavorful red wine.
Similar Cigars: The Carlos Torano Signature Collection has the same spicy flavor, but doesn’t have the floral notes or the chocolate flavor that this one does.

I have one or two of the Selecao Blends in my humidor and I look forward to trying them.

I bought a box of these about a month ago and have them resting. Come spring, ( if I can wait that long. Fortunately it comes early in San Antonio…) it’s going to be the first thing I pull out for a smoke on the back porch. Warm weather is a must for cigar smoking, imho. The hotter the better. Can’t wait.
