Description: Ah, the Jucy Lucy. It is proof that even in the cigar world, size doesn’t matter. When I first laid eyes on this one, I will admit that I laughed. I laughed a lot, actually. Standing proud and tall at a whopping 3 inches, I just wanted to cuddle the little bugger and pinch it’s cheek, if cigars had cheeks that is. I knew immediately that this was going to be my next review. I resisted the urge to grab more than 2 of these which in some ways I regret, which I’ll come to later. First things first of course.
The Jucy Lucy, like all the other cigars in the Drew Estate Natural line, has a base leaf from Nicaragua. After that, I can’t tell you much more. This line is toted as being any combination of up to 15 different tobaccos from about the same amount of different countries. As hard as I looked, I was unable to find word anywhere of what leaves are in which cigars. Lucy’s wrapper is a nice Cameroon that has veins on the finer side, though not exceedingly so. Prelight draw had a nice amount of resistance, and the flavor had a hint of sweetness that I at first thought was cherry, but later confirmed to be a more caramel like presence. That caramel flavor carried itself nicely throughout this short smoke, and buddied itself up with a symphony mix of leather, creamy coffee, maybe just a hint of chocolate, and a tiny nip of pepper. While that sounds like something that might be too sweet for a cigar, it had a nice balance that kept itself from going overboard. Due to the short stature of this cigar, I can’t accurately say that the flavor changed much through the course of the smoke. I can only say that within the first third, all the flavors were present and held steady till the end.
A few notes on the non flavor side of this cigar, the construction was well done on this one. I had a bit of a circus trying to light Lucy, simply for the fact that a torch lighter held 3 inches from your fingers has a tendency to singe you slightly no matter what angle you hold it at. I might try going with matches on this one next time. Once lit, this cigar gave out a pleasant smelling smoke, kept its ash to about 3/4 of an inch before needing a tap, and required no touch ups what so ever. I smoked this one down as far as I could go before it started burning my fingers, and never once got a harsh bit.
Verdict: I enjoyed this little lady very much! There are times in my day when a cigar just sounds fantastic, but lack of time is my prohibiter. Definitely not a problem with this one though as from start to finish, I think it only took me about 30 minutes to smoke. It also happens that on a few rare occasions a friend or family member has stopped by for a visit, and asked if they could try a cigar. I always hesitate on that because nothing hurts so much as someone tossing half a cigar away because they either didn’t like it, or had to go. I’ll be keeping some of these cigars in my stock, most certainly from now on. If not for me, than for the rare occasion when I get a chance to share the love that is a good cigar.
