Description: The AVO 787 was developed by Davidoff Blender Hendrik Kelner, along with Avo Uvezian in response to aficionados clamoring for sophisticated and flavorful cigar. The cigar is packed 22 cigars to a box in a 7-8-7 format, hence the name. The filler is a blend of Piloto, San Vincente, and Olor tobaccos from the Dominican Republic. This cigar caught my interest at the RTDA, where Mr. Avo himself entertained the audience with some of his music. After a brief word with the musician, and a quick picture taken by the wife, I was given one of these beauties to try. Sadly, I was only given one, and I smoked it at the show. I’ve only recently had the opportunity to purchase a few more of these to review.

The AVO 787 is a well made cigar, but a tad rough looking. The wrapper had some noticeable veins and a bit toothy, but overall the construction was superb. The unlit aroma reminiscent of a barnyard. At this point, I know some of you are probably giving your screen a strange look and thinking I must be a bit off. However, I’ve found that that barnyard smell has typically accompanied some of the best cigars I have ever smoked.

Roasted nuts and a buttery flavor hit right out the gate, as well as a lingering tingle on the tongue. The cigar maintained that nutty flavor throughout the smoke while under going some surprising changes in other aspects of the flavor. An inch or so into the smoke it had some hints of leather that faded out as the first third finished up. I then picked up a creamy coffee tone which merged into some faint hints of cocoa. The burn itself didn’t need any touch up as I encountered no issues in that area. The ash was a beautiful light gray color, and seemed to tap of fairly easy.

Verdict: Does anyone have any advice on explaining the need to purchase a $300+ box of cigars to their wife? I’m currently accepting ideas. The cigar hovers between a mild to medium strength and shouldn’t overpower any one’s senses. I enjoyed the complexity of the cigar and think it would go very well with a cup of coffee or a bit of Scotch. Is it worth $15? I think it is, but obviously I’d lean more towards smoking it for special occasions at this price.

Similar Cigars: The Graycliff Red Label PG I had a couple weeks ago has the same nutty profile, and falls right around the same price range.

I was fortunate enough to get my picture taken with Mr. Uvezian at the 2007 RTDA Trade Show.
