Ohio Smoking Ban Exemption Hearing Follow Up.

by Jesse on October 18, 2007

The Enquirer has the details of the hearing in Columbus:

COLUMBUS – Ohio’s new public smoking ban may be saving lives, but it’s killing business for two Cincinnati-area cigar bars, their owners testified Wednesday.

Sales are down at least 60 percent since the state began enforcing an anti-smoking law in May at Havana Martini Club, 441 Vine St., Downtown, and Anthony’s Cigar Bar & Grille, West Chester, according to their testimony.

They appeared before the Senate Health Committee about legislation proposed by state Sen. Gary Cates, R-West Chester, to amend the new state law and allow smoking in about 20 cigar bars across Ohio.

Attention smokers I want to introduce to the woman who is our Enemy No. 1 in Ohio. The organizations she’s involved with our responsible for the draconian “Issue 5″ that sent us across the river or out in the streets to enjoy our cigars, pipes and cigarettes.

Tracy Sabetta, vice president for government relations with the American Cancer Society, said her organization opposes any new exemption from the smoking ban passed by Ohio voters last November.

“We are going to continue to oppose any legislation that could weaken the law,” she said.

I’ve added a special alert in my reader so I know whenever Mrs. Sabetta opens her mouth. She’s Ohio’s biggest nanny looking out for your health, because she obviously feels you’re too stupid to make your own choices in life.

I’m not from Ohio. I’m from California. But what the state of Ohio I think should do is at least exempt bars that sell very little food of maybe a 20% income or bars and clubs that retail tobacco products, and venues that don’t cater to children including private establishments. And the cold winters that Ohio gets I think people should have a few places where they could socialize and smoke.
