Description: Another success from the collaboration of Ernesto Padilla and Pepin Garcia, the 1948 is a medium bodied cigar with a subtle bouquet of flavors.

The 1948 is the second addition to the Padilla trilogy started by Ernesto in honor of his father, one of Cuba’s most accomplished poets. 1948 marks the year his father published his first book. The filler consists of Cuban-seed Nicaraguan Criollo and Corojo tobaccos secured by a Criollo binder, immediately producing subtle notes of pepper and spice over a wood base. The blend is then completed with an incredible looking Nicaraguan Corojo wrapper, adding even more layers of spicy notes, without overwhelming the palate. The Padilla 1948 is full-flavored, yet medium-bodied and balanced. Coming from the hands of Don Pepin Garcia, in collaboration with Ernesto Padilla

This cigar had a nice “barnyard” flavor on the prelight, which disappeared with the lighting of it. The first inch was very spicy with pepper and unidentified spices. You can taste the awesome corojo in this throughout the entire smoke (corojo being my favorite). After about 2 inches the pepper subsided and left a nice creamy, smooth spice which was just enough to keep it interesting. It had a very nice draw, but the burn was a different story. The wrapper on this cigar is very thin and delicate. I would try not to smoke it on a cool dry day outside like I did. It did crack and start to flake away.

Verdict: I enjoyed the cigar very much, but the burn and wrapper problems made it a task to finish without too much work. I have smoked a few of these in the past and have not had this problem. It reminds me of a lot of the Pepin blends, with the spice being all “upfront”, then dying off to a mellow smoke till the nub. I would like to try the other vitolas and see if they have a different flavor profile.

Similar Cigars: Definitely very similar to the Padilla Edition Especiale Achilles. It also reminded me of a CAO Criollo. If you like the Pepin blends, this one is for you!

John hit the nail on the head with this review. I’m trying to score a deal on these at one of the auction sites. My wife is starting to get concerned about the number of cigars she’s seen coming in the door lately, so I’ll have to get them while I can.
