Description: One of the more prominent teams in Cuban history, the Habana Leones, were nicknamed the “Rojos”, or “reds” by their fans. The red theme is carried over to this all new cigar named for the famous baseball team. Habana Leon uses a very strong and full bodied blend. The filler is 70% Ligero tobacco, wrapped in a Nicaraguan grown binder. It is topped off by a Nicaraguan grown reddish-brown Corojo wrapper from a 2000 crop. A red and gold label top off this full bodied masterpiece made in Miami, FL by Pepin Garcia.
It is a very well constructed cigar, right down to the triple cap. The band is a very simple looking band which reminds me of a PSD4. The wrapper was flawless and had a slight red tint to it. Upon lighting it, I was overcome with that famous Pepin spiciness, which filled my mouth. It has tons of spice for about the first inch, then drops off to a medium spice with some subtle cedar, and somewhat of a sweetness. It does indeed remind me of ALL of the Pepin creations. The burn was awesome, along with a tight non-flaky ash. The draw was a bit tight to start off then opened up after a few minutes. I did exhale a few puffs out through my nose and let me tell you it is strong with all of that Ligero. I did have a slight buzz when I finished this one!!!
Verdict: I am a big, well…HUGE Pepin fan and this is the first Habana Leon I have smoked. It lives up to the Pepin standards. Great construction, great burn, and that pepper, which turns mild and complex. I have a few more of these in the humidor. I will have to do another review after they get a little age on them.
Similar Cigars: Padilla Miami 8/11, El Rey de Los Habanos, Padilla 1932, and of course just about any Pepin masterpiece!

I’m ashamed to admit this is the first I’ve heard of them, I’ll have to see if I can track a few down.

Nice choice and a cool review, John! You’ve inspired me — I’m about to fire one of these up as well. Agreed that these are surprisingly smooth given the high ligero content. Next time you have a couple of hours to set aside, the “A” size in this line (9.25 x 48) is profound.
