Description: Recently, I have been a fan of anything Padilla has put out. So, why would I pass up the opportunity to grab some of these! I picked up several bundles and hosted a nice split with several fellow brothers. An absolutely gorgeous beefy smoke – A big fat belicoso 6 x 54. The wrapper was magnificent rugged black Nicaraguan ligero leaf.
Easy clip, giving me prelit draws of flat out, heavy-duty tobacco. I think I caught a buzz before I even lit it!! Decent draw, a little tight, but it loosened as it smoked. Upon lighting, a deep, almost burning tobacco flavor dominated the scene. It wasn’t harsh, per say, just very strong, very full! I detected bitter nuts and coffee flavors, but again, the tobacco overpowered them! This continued till about the halfway mark. The nutty and coffee flavors shed their bitterness and smoothed out nicely. However, as previously mentioned, the full-flavored tobacco overshadowed anything else this cigar put out. Toward the end, it started to get hot, and quite a bit of tar/nicotine buildup. Yuk! I burned it off twice, then finally tossed it with a full inch left.
I encountered several minor problems with the burn. It liked to go out if I didn’t pay constant attention to it. It began to tunnel around the halfway point. A little stamp out and an easy relight, and I was back in session. And I could not fix the previously mentioned tar buildup. This bad boy produced a lot of smoke. Flaky ash that dropped whenever it decided to,,, usually on my lap. Full Flavor, Full Strength.
Verdict: I think Padilla went for strength over anything else on this one. A little over an hour to smoke. I had two friends over last night and gave one each to them. One loved it! The other sat it down not quite halfway into it: “Too strong!” I have two left,,, and I’ll let them sit awhile, although I don’t think aging is going to do anything for them! They’re just freaking strong. Definitely not to be reckoned with before a large meal.
Similar Cigars: The only cigar I can come up with would be the La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero, however, I like the LFD much better.

Nice review and just another reason why Padillas not a staple in my humi. I’ve had similar issues with many of the other lines in Padillas arsonal. And I love a strong cigar, but it’s gotta be flavorful too.

I love the Padilla 1948, but last night I had a Padilla Corojo that was awful, it tasted like a relit cigar the whole time.

Interesting. Haven’t tried the new torp incarnation of the Obsidian. I’m still working thru my old stash of the original toro sized version. I found them to be medium bodied, one-dimensional, woody and sweet, but pleasant.
Question for anyone who has tried both versions: Did they change the blend, or is it just a question of the new torps being too young?

I have not tried the 1948, but the 1932 is by far the best Padilla going. The rest of the line is still up for debate. Need more experience with this line.
(nice review)

If I am not mistaken this is a joint venture with Cigar International. This is what replaced the Edition Especial Achilles!

The Padilla Obsidian is a uniquely rewarding two hour smoke. It is no surprise that attempting to condense those two hours into just over an hour results in a strong tobacco flavor, heat, tar buildup, and failure to appreciate its subtle nuances. Next time, relax and give it some time to open up and reward you with its flavors. If you just want a quick cigar, try something else.

I’m with ace on this one - It’s a big, kickass cigar and smoking too fast heats it up and makes it harsh. That said, I bought a box of these and they do not smoke well when young. I’ve never had so many burn problems. Keeping them drier and giving them a couple months has helped sort it out and they are getting better. If you like strong, full-flavored cigars it’s worth buying a box and then forgetting about it for six months.
