Bad Cigar Moment

By Jesse | December 5, 2007 |

I didn’t get around to finishing up the review I wanted to post today so I’m going for random filler content here. :)

I was driving to MicroCenter to bask in geek heaven for awhile, alright it was an excuse to take a 45 minute drive to enjoy a cigar. It started to rain a bit so I rolled my window up some and just kept it open a crack for smoke to escape. Well the cigar started burning badly and only one half of it would stay lit. I finally got ticked off enough and went to throw it out the window. Did I mention I forgot to roll it down? Needless to say I had an explosion of ash, tobacco, and still burning to tobacco in lap and face. Luckily I was at my exit so I zipped into a parking lot to do the “I think I have hot ash in my pants” dance.

Now I don’t dispose of my cigar until I reach my destination.

When I was fairly new to cigars, I once smoked a pretty powerful cigar (I forget what kind) too quickly, and on an empty stomach.

    That didn’t go to well.

I turned green pretty quickly, but tried to finish the thing anyway, which only made matters worse.

I won’t go into the details, but there was vomiting, and a nicotine buzz that left me nauseous and dizzy for several hours.

LOL! Sorry to laugh at your misfortune, but you gotta admit, that’s pretty funny… But I should say I’m glad it didn’t result in any injury. (That would be considerably less funny!)

I think the worst thing that’s happened to me so far is getting a good cigar ash branding. I like to see how long an ash I can get. One particularly long as fell on my forearm and burned in a nice circular pattern that is visible to this day! The construction was so good that it sat there in a lovely column of pain until I brushed it off into the ashtray. Fortunately my watch normally covers it.

@Adam: I had the same happen to me when the new Trinidad Maduros were released. I didn’t puke but I smoked a couple strong cigars back to back and left myself feeling very green.

@Brian: You sure it wasn’t the wife holding you down and burning you for not doing the dishes?

And on another side note… do not sneeze or cough with a mouth full of smoke.

Haha. Yea, I had the exact same thing happen to me. I think it was from a JFR cigar (does that make me a wimp??)- Anyway I started to really feel the buzz but I didn’t want to quit smoking. So, I ended up in the sick boat. I felt like i was going to vomit, but I’ll tell you how I got over it. I immediately washed my hands and brushed my teeth and took a cool shower. That made it tolerable because the flavor and smell was gone. Then I got my g/f to rub my feet for about 30 minutes - hahah. That took my mind off of the sick feeling and I passed out.

    :-)

@Cigar Experience: I’ll keep that in mind the next time I find myself feeling green. That’s a great girlfriend you’ve got, by the way. When it happened to me, my girlfriend at the time just laughed at me.

Hah.. Well, you gotta pick’m better, bro! haha. I take it you ditched her by the “girlfriend at the time”? Next time when you’re on your first date make sure if you get sick from cigars she’ll take care of you. That’s important! :-)

Yeah, she’s an ex-girlfriend now. I’ll have to add “Will you take care of me if a cigar makes me sick?” to the list of questions I ask no a first date. ;)

My worst has got to be one of the first times I ever smoked a cigar. I knew not to inhale, but I hadn’t quite mastered the art of smoking a cigar quite yet. While having a cigar with some coworkers after work I found myself taking a nice long drag with nothing in the lungs to exhale. For what seemed like an eternity I tried to expel the smoke from mouth by simply leaving it open, puffing imaginary air, you name it. Eventually, I ran out of oxygen and took a great big gasp of air and smoke. I must of coughed and choked for a good 5 minutes and they still never let me forget it.

I drive a lot and of course most of the time you will find a cigar keeping me company. I think the worst for me so far was I went to tap the ash out the window and it flew back in right into my eye. It was like getting hit by a bug. I didn’t wreck thank god and I keep meaning to pick up a cigar travel ashtray for the work van.

Gives a whole new meaning to the lyrics, “Shake ya’ ash/watch yourself.”

Jesse…what I wouldn’t have given to be in the car next to you when you did that!

These are some great stories. I had to send the page around to the coworkers so they could see what I’ve been laughing at.

I’m a newbie here (and to cigars) and want to mention I put ‘window deflectors’ (from weathertech) on my car and can smoke away in a heavy down pour with the window down about 3 inches. Like most things for me, when I get into something, I really get into it. I have tried over 100 different premium cigars in the last 4 months and have about 10 pages of my own notes on all of them. Nothing has made me green so far, even the Camocho Tripple Maduro, but strongest of the bunch has been the 601 ‘Green’. Man!

Can I weigh in on 2 apparently oft asked cigar questions form my fresh nebie perspective? Ring label on/off? Plastic wrapper on/off?

Label on! I know the old reason for taking the label off (pretensious), but when playing golf or tossing the ball with the kids or working in the yard, I tend to drop the cigar in the grass. The label makes it easier to find. Also, when smoking with a friend using 1 ashtray, less likely to mistakenly grab the wrong cigar!

Plastic - are you kidding? That stuff is toxic. Don’t let it mix with your cigars. Plus, nothing like looking in a well stocked humidor at those bare babbies.

    Please excuse the lenght.

  17. Jesse Says:
    December 30th, 2007 at 2:22 pm

You don’t have to worry it is cellophane not plastic. Cellophane is actually made from plant material. :)

Many thanks Jesse. Though I still like the bare appearance, maybe I won’t be so anal about stripping 3 boxes worth as soon as I get them home. I looked up cellophane at Wikipedia and it said it is somethimes made from hemp fiber! Maybe I’ll keep it on longer, or smoke it with the wrapper. Nah. Thanks again.

  19. Adam Snider Says:
    December 30th, 2007 at 2:54 pm

@11:11 - Personally, I would recommend leaving the cello on the cigar until a few weeks before you’re going to be smoking it. It will help protect the wrapper from accidentally getting torn as you take cigars out and put others into the humidor. It’ll also do a little bit to help prevent the cigar from “absorbing” too much of the flavour and smell of other cigars in the humidor.

  20. Jesse Says:
    December 30th, 2007 at 2:54 pm

Yeah this is something I feel it totally up to the the individual smoker. I leave mine in the cellophane typically because I do quite a bit of trading and carting them around so I want the extra protection.

  21. Adam Snider Says:
    December 30th, 2007 at 2:57 pm

Jesse, I agree. Like so many other things with cigars (and life in general), there is rarely a “proper” way to do it. Just because one way may be more common doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily more or less correct than a less common way of doing the same thing.

  22. stinkie Says:
    December 30th, 2007 at 4:17 pm

The age old question that has never been solved lol..

I agree with both Jesse and Adam, I have always believed it is up the the individual. I might take them off if I have a box but other than that I keep them on so it help protect them.

  23. 11:11 Says:

Good practical advice on protecting them with the cello. Same reason I keep the band on, practicality. ‘Up to the individual’ and ‘there is rarely a “proper” way to do it’ is great counsel regarding not only cigars. People close to me know me by the quote ‘each individual is their own highest authority’. But heck, this is your cigar blog, not my philosophy blog.

Enjoying a 601 red right now, perfect. I wonder if the foot will light my fireworks…
