I recently wrote a piece for a local magazine about the Chicago-based Los Blancos Cigar Co. I like knowing what’s going on in my home town, you know?
Well, I just got off the phone with David Blanco, VP of business development for Los Blancos. He released details about the company’s new line, “Gods of War,” which is scheduled to drop this year at the RTDA conference. (The company literally just got rights to the name, after a brief naming dispute with Universal Studios over a similarly named film.
Gods of War will have two blends:
- Martes, which is Spanish for Mars, the Roman god of war. The Martes will feature a five-year aged Havana sun-grown wrapper.
- Ares, the Greek god of war. The Ares will have a five-year aged rosado sun-grown wrapper.
The cigars’ title, has a dual purpose, according to Blanco. “Greek and Roman farmers would pay to the gods of war to fight to protect their crops,” he says. “We thought it was a nice play on words, as cigars obviously come from tobacco, a crop.”
Here’s another tidbit: The Blancos are used to combat, as five generations of the family have been members of the United States military. Blanco himself is a Sgt. 1st Class in the U.S. Army Reserves, and has seen action in Afghanistan. (In fact, he spoke with me from the Fort Benning Army base in Georgia.)
Both sticks will have a limited production run of less than 100,000 each and will mostly come in larger ring gauges (54-56ish), but will also have a lancero size available. Price details were not released.
