What’s the most expensive cigar accessory you ever bought?

by Daniel on March 7, 2008

Inspired by Adam Snider’s recent comment on our post asking about the most you ever spent on a cigar, we have a new one for you:

What’s the most you’ve spent on a cigar accessory? (Cutter, lighter, humidor, etc.) What was it? Does it hold any special significance?

I have to imagine it is going to be tough for anyone to have spent the most on anything but a humidor. Especially anyone who owns a cabinet humidor.

So I will go with what I think of as my most extravagant, if not most expensive purchase.

Listing for $59.99, this item was “specialed” by the Corona Cigar Co. with four of their super-premium house cigars, each costing $10 or more in the box/pack, at the same 59.99 price.

An alleged alligator skin four cigar pocket case with cedar lining and alleged buffalo horn cap. Seems so retro – so caveman almost – “Mmm, dead animal parts good.”

It’s a nice case. I wish it did not include a “Corona Cigar” medallion on it (not shown in any photos).

Hey, Upmann lovers, TCC is offering this same case as a throw-in with a box of Upmann Signature Double Eagles at $117. I have paid $109 for a bhox of these smokes and that is about normal, so this seems like a fair deal. (Be warned, this will probably have a TCC medallion on it)

Damn, that alligator skin cigar case sounds pretty cool.

Glad to see you’re enjoying the site, FNA!

As I mentioned in the comment that inspired this post, I haven’t really spent a ton of money on accessories. I’m a bit of a cheapskate, so I try to spend as little as possible without sacrificing quality.

Through the magic of eBay, I’ve been able to keep my costs low, and I think my most expensive item has been my (admittedly small) humidor, which cost me about $30 or $40 dollars. The closest equivalent that my local shop has costs almost twice that amount.

Luckily, I tend to smoke my cigars almost as fast as I buy new ones, so my small humidor has been working well so far. But, I think I’m going to need to upgrade to a bigger one, soon, which will likely see me spending several hundred dollars.

How big a humidor will you be buying, Adam?

I’m going to buy a cabinet humidor eventually, currently I’m using 3 large desktop humidors. The smallest one actually cost me the most. It is a Savoy blue desktop humidor that I bought at a charity benefit auction for $75. It was for a good cause and I love the color.

Jesse,

I would forget the “eventually” as to a cabinet humidor.

You say “currently I’m using 3 large desktop humidors”. My experience has been that the first “eventually” to occur will be that you will see a box deal too good to pass up or get a desire for some cigars too strong to resist and you’ll have to get another desktop for these new purchases and then another and so on.

Had I known how many cigars I would eventually end up owning I would have bought either bigger or multiple cabinets.

The one cabinet I do own is the Trivoli from Tampa Humidor, an honest 1,000 count ‘half-cabinet’ (about 3 feet tall).

I keep my purchases to a minimum. As a rule I don’t use a credit card to purchase any cigars. I got to have the money in the checking account or I don’t buy them. This wasn’t always the case. :) The main thing keeping me from getting the cabinet now is space. I’ve got a small house with no basement. It was the perfect size when I was chidless but now with three kids, heh, let’s just say I hide in the garage an awful lot. :)

Adam,

You mentioned “Through the magic of eBay”. I assume you mean for humidors? What models, if any, have you bought?

I have had luck with 3 1/2 humidors from E-bay – I mean real satisfaction, at least on the 3 of them, another I am only half-satisfied with and one was a piece of crap (which I should have guessed).

I looked recently and they no longer sold what might be my favorite e-bay humidor, the “Unique 4-drawer 120 count”, which I use as my daily smokes box.

Holds an honest 100 full size torpedoes. Using the bottom drawer for coronas, I fill the box to about 110. If this humidor has any cedar component as alleged, I couldn’t find it, but over the course of a year, I’ve lined all the drawers with the cedar insert/dividers one gets in some five packs and boxes.

100 count, cedar lined – $14.99. Yowza!

That’s a good buy! I got an antique metal lined one that I’m going to refinish for $6. I need someone with some wood working tools to make the spanish cedar lining for me. The original metal was too corroded to use.

Not counting my cabinet cooling/humidifed humidor, and an Elie Bleu desk humidor:

14K gold Cubano double guillotine cigar cutter (No longer made, bought one of the last ones available from a company representative).

Still never been used.

I paid out about $50 for a dual flame colibri and $65 for a nice xikar cutter. the cutter still works, can’t say the same for the Colibri. Keep meaning to pack that up and send it in for a fix.

For me its been 2 things:

(1) ST. Dupont Line 2 black laquer lighter

(2) Large black, hand painted, Montecristo humidor. Straight from cuba.

For just those 2 items about $3000 was spent. But well worth it.

so far to date my most expensive item was a $45 ticket to the “Twins smoke shop” annual cook out event. Granted it came with $75 worth of premo smokes, reps giving single sticks out left and right, hot chicks cutting and lighting (for those non cigar smokers, that’s like the ultimate porn fluffer for cigar guys), t-shirt and hat giveaways, raffles, live music and the best catered bbq your gonna find in these parts. Ya-friggin-ho!!! thanks Kert, see ya at this years event too. Jay, Derry NH.
