The Joy of Making Homemade Wine

By Jesse | March 17, 2008

This entry comes from Vince(Stinkie) from Cigar Beat. He’s won a Camacho 5-Pack and Hat as part of our Anniversary Contest.

People have been making homemade wine for ever. I was lucky enough to have learned the process of making home made wine from my grandfather years ago before he passed. Making wine is not only rewarding but a lesson in patients and even a little science. You can play in this hobby without putting a lot of money into it and the rewards are delicious.

Even though my grandfather pressed most of the fruit in his younger years he taught me how to use frozen fruit juice. Your other choice is to buy kits with all the ingredients needed. The combinations are endless, we have made it from grapes, dandelions and pears along with many others like fresh apple cider from a local apple farm for my wedding.

Here are the minimal requirements to get started:
1 one gallon glass jug — an ex-apple juice, cranberry juice or wine jug which hasn’t been used to store toxins
1 rubber band
1 4×4 inch square of heavy kitchen plastic wrap
1 medium sized food grade funnel, plastic or metal
1 long stick or rod for stirring

Later (in about 2 months), you’ll need another gallon jug, and a 3-4 ft. length of clear plastic tubing from an aquarium shop or wine making supply shop.

Before you know it you will be enjoying your own creations and maybe even bragging a little to your friends.
