Henry Clay Honduran Cigar Review

By Jesse | March 22, 2008

Frank Nusbickel submitted this review for the Anniversary Bash Contest. He’s won a Camach 5-Pack and a Hat and has a chance to win the Grand Prize.

I am not particularly a fan of the Lonsdale size. To me they seem a corona that didn’t have the sense to quit when it was ahead or an anorexic Churchill. However, when I saw a chance (at auction) to knock off a certain box of Lonsdales for $34, my fondness for Henry Clay smokes made the 6.5 x 44 Dahlia, a cigar I couldn’t pass up. I’m glad I didn’t.

This is a very good looking cigar out of the Flor de Copan factory in Honduras with a clean and smooth Nicaraguan rosada wrapper. The color falls between shade-grown Connecticut and EMS. The binder is also Nicaraguan and the filler blends Nicaraguan, Honduran and Peruvian tobaccos. It is firm and almost elegant in the hand. These cigars burn very nicely and evenly the whole length and they draw easily and well.

While Henry Clays have a reputation for full-bodied cigars, I place this cigar squarely on the mild side of medium. A very clean and somewhat neutral smoke with some nutty and cedar qualities. For me the main thing with the Dahlia is the solid tobacco flavor - you know you are smoking a cigar. To contra-phrase the ad campaign from a few years ago “This IS your father’s Oldsmobile.” Notwithstanding the ‘old school’ style of flavor, the finish on this cigar is quick and clean, and if it is not short and sweet like a Temptations song from the 60s , it is certainly no George Clinton epic opus - that is to say, it doesn’t get over-long and funkadelic.

If you are looking for spicy or exotic flavors, nuance and complexity, this isn’t the cigar for you.

If, however, you want a nice clean, relaxing, and satisfying burn after dinner or if you have the day off and are looking for a full size smoke in the morning, I highly recommend this vitola, the Henry Clay Honduran Dahlia.
