Fuente Opus X Phantom Lancero Cigar Review

By Jesse | March 26, 2008

This entry was sent to us by Scott, he’s won a 5-Pack of Camacho Cigars and a Camacho Hat along with a chance to win a box of Camacho 10th Anniversary Cigar.

The Fuente Fuente Opus Phantom X Lancero 2005 7 ½ by 41 presented in a glass tube.

Released in late 2005, just 5,000 of the “Journey to Chateau de la Fuente” BBMF boxed sets were available, each of which comes with a music CD, a photo essay book and three rare Fuente Fuente OpusX cigars (each individually encased in sealed glass tubes).

Receiving a cigar that comes in a glass tube as part of the presentation lets the recipient know they’re in for something special. I was. Over the next hour and half I engulfed this fine hand rolled cigar.

The appearance, once removed from the tube was near perfect. A tightly, not too tight, rolled cigar with no soft spots awaited. I proceeded to cut the end and light slowly with 2 matches. The first to toast, the second to begin the first puff.

Immediately there was a woodsy spice. The exhale through the nose was almost enough to make my eyes water. YOWZAH. I like it.

The first inch or so remained with a spice, but as the cigar progressed and burned evenly (not one touch up with my Xikar lighter was ever needed) the cigar began to take on a different complexity.

Drawing was near effortless. I’m a puff and a half smoker and each one lead to a puff lead to a beeeeyouteeful mouthful of billowing looming smoke. I enjoyed a buttery, creamy, leathery medium to full bodied taste throughout the mid and latter part of the X.

Surprisingly the ash fell off the first two times without my assistance. I thought the gray flaky ash would hold together better, but how well the ash holds doesn’t determine the taste of the smoke, and that’s what I was after anyhow.

And this cigar was tasty. Almost cameroonish tasting. Slightly tingly on the pallet, but smooth and flavorful. Humanha, humanah, humanah!

As the end began to inevitably loom, with about 2 ½” remaining the cigar made a 90 degree turn and headed to the stronger side becoming enjoyably spicy. If you like spice in a cigar be prepared to enjoy, because it becomes apparently evident in the last third of this vitola! Kind of a cool cinnamon flavor if you will. Not obnoxious but definitely present. And it continues to the end.

In summary, whether you are or aren’t an Opus X frequenter I highly recommend you give this hand rolled stogie a try. It was a very enjoyable experience for ma and I believe it will be for you as well.
