Luis Sanchez has been a great supporter of this site, always seeing that I get something new of his to try out. The newest cigar to come out of his factory in the Dominican Republic is the Jameson. These cigars are made for the Jameson Cigar Co. by La Tradicion Cubana. I honestly don’t know much about the Jameson Cigar Co, but I’ve enjoyed most of the cigars I’ve had coming from La Tradicion Cubana so I was eager to give it a try.
Construction:
The cigar does look a bit on rougher side with its toothy wrapper having a larger vein in it. I didn’t have any real issues with the draw, but torpedoes do give you a bit more control over that.
Burn:
The last couple I’ve smoked have been really good, as you can see by the picture I’d pretty much smoked half the cigar before I had to knock the ash loose. I did have a few where the wrappers split while smoking; one was severe enough to render the cigar unsmokeable.
Flavor:
I had a hard time picking out the flavors here. I think from the start I picked up more woodiness than Walt did in his Jameson Robusto Review. I also picked out those savory flavors, and couldn’t help but think of roast beef or beef stew.
From the halfway point until the end of the cigar the woodiness really took on a dominant oak flavor and I got the distinct impression of a dry red wine. After that I really didn’t notice any huge changes in flavor, these hung on until I put the cigar to rest.
Verdict:
When I first tried this cigar I wasn’t sure what to think, I waffled between like and dislike. I think a few weeks rest in the humidor really helped out these cigars and pushed them firmly over to like as I really enjoyed the last three or four. They are a definite medium in body and strength and have some unique flavor characteristics that after awhile I found myself liking.
My biggest complaint is that the wrapper appears to be a bit fragile. I did have two or three split while I was smoking and even one that was rendered unsmokeable after this happened. I’m not entirely ruling out the environment on this one, but it hasn’t been a regular occurrence on other cigars I’ve smoked lately.
I think the cigars are reasonably priced at under $5 each. You can purchase 5-Packs and Boxes directly from Jameson Cigar Co. I think this is one of those cigars you’ll either love or hate, so I’d say try a five pack before springing for a whole box.
