General Cigar Website Review

By Jesse | April 25, 2008

This week I continue my look into the websites of some of the larger manufacturers by examining General Cigar’s Website. The actual website is their portal called Cigar World and features some heavily used forums.

Cigar World

Cigars: A+
Overall the cigar information is really good; they break down the different tobacco in the cigar along with pictures of every size. The one added feature they have is user reviews of each cigar are available. I think this is a big plus over having just reviews from the cigar magazines.

Company: B+
The company information is pretty good over all. They’ve got a good history section and plenty of contact information. The only area that seemed lacking was a News Section. You can’t tell me that a company this large doesn’t have an overflowing stack of press releases they could be posting on the site.

Features and Usability: A+
This site has quite a few things going for it. The forums are very active and they are always running contests which you can enter daily. They have an events calendar and retailer locater, two must haves I’ve mentioned in my other reviews. The one thing I’m going to look at a bit more closely myself is the Herfboard. I’m going to be planning a local gathering sometime in the next few months and it might be a helpful tool to notify people about it.

Recommendations:
Overall this is one of the better sites out there. While they have some flash it isn’t excessive and is only on the main page for the most part. Maybe I missed it but the only thing I felt was lacking was a News Section. While it might not be a big deal for the average consumer I often find a wealth of information about a cigar that might only be in the press releases when the cigar is announced.
