Cigar Review: Perdomo Habano Corojo Torpedo

By Jesse | May 2, 2008 |

Brand: Perdomo Cigars
Line: Habano Corojo
Vitola: Torpedo 6.5 x 54
Origin: Nicaragua
Wrapper: Nicaraguan Corojo
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Flavor: Medium to Full
Strength: Medium
Price: $108 (Box of 20)

I reviewed the Perdomo Habano Maduro awhile back and was impressed with it so I thought I’d take a look at the Perdomo Habano Corojo and Connecticut. The Perdomo Habano Corojo shares pretty much the same blend as the Maduro with tobacco from three different regions in Nicaragua.

Construction: The wrapper does have a nice sheen to it and fairly smooth the veins are not overly noticeable. It has a consistent firmness throughout the cigar without any soft spots. Prior to lighting it I checked the draw and found it satisfying, but maybe a touch on the easy side.

Burn: Over all the Perdomo Habano Corojo burned very well. The burn would get off occasionally, but it typically evened out on its own. My only real complaint is the ash tended to flake a bit. It burned fairly slow, I’m surprised how long this cigar lasts typically pushing two hours.

Flavor: The predominate flavor right off the bat is Corojo. I know that most of you probably want me to explain that further, but I really can’t. Corojo seems to have a very unique flavor about it that I can pick out but have trouble picking apart. I’m reminded of used scotch or whiskey aging barrels, a touch of cocoa, black pepper, leather and walnuts. Besides the dominating Corojo, I picked out a touch of sweetness which gave the creamy smoke an almost molasses feel to it. I also picked up a slightly earthen note popping up occasionally. I didn’t pick out any major flavor changes, but this cigar is far from boring.

Verdict: If you enjoy that Corojo flavor profile I think you’ll enjoy this one. It is a toss up between this and the Perdomo Habano Maduro on which I like more. I’m actually leaning towards this cigar, but I think most people would prefer the maduro. My list of favorites is starting to include quite a few Perdomo Cigars and this is another one on the list. Set aside some time for this cigar as I’ve found them lasting nearly 2 hours.

I have been wanting to try Perdomo for quite awhile, but for some reason it’s not an easy cigar to find around Houston. I may need to start ordering online more often.

Jason if you are from Houston and have checked it out yet I suggest you head over to Cigar Live. Lots of Texans on that site. They may be able to tell you where to find some locally.

I smoked one of these fine cigars and have decide that they are better than the Connecticut wrapper, however I would like to try a Maduro as well.I will definitely add the Corojo to my humidor!!!

This is a great smoke as long as it burns right. Robusto is my favorite, great for a night smoke in the back yard.
