Carlos Torano makes a bunch of great cigars that I’m a fan of.  Indeed, the Exodus 1959 Silver Edition ranks among my favorite cigars.  So it was something of a surprise when I was searching for my traditional Friday night cigar and came to the realization that I’ve never actually tried the 1959 Exodus itself.  That’s especially the case because I’ve been on something of a box press kick lately and my store was featuring a lovely looking box pressed double corona that was calling my name.  I bought it and smoked it on the spot.

Construction:
The construction on the cigar was excellent.  There were no spots that I could see, and no soft spots.  The wrapper was a pleasant color and the cigar itself had a great aroma pre-light.

Burn:
The burn was even, smooth, and slow, with just enough resistance on the draw.  Perfect for a relaxing evening–it took me close to two hours to finish.  Which was surprising, because there was certainly no shortage of light gray smoke being produced.  The ash was snow-white and dense, with hardly any flaking.  And despite the slow burn, I didn’t need to touch it up once.

Flavor:
I have to admit that I was slightly disappointed with the first quarter of this cigar.  Don’t get me wrong–the smoke was light and smooth, with some notes of leather.  But it lacked the complexity of flavor that I’d come to appreciate in the Silver Edition.  Fortunately, some additional notes came in in the second part of the cigar; the leather notes began to sing in harmony with some wonderful spice and pepper flavors, along with the same leather notes providing a unifying flavor.  Those notes played together until I was forced to take off the band, at which point some more earthy notes came into the cigar, which finished with some strong coffee notes to complement the spice and leather.

Verdict:
The 1959 Exodus is definitely a pleasant, relaxing smoke, and the construction and care in the cigar were excellent.  However, I tend to like more complex flavors in my cigar, and this one was pretty simple–the leather and spice were most prominent, and remained mostly unchanged throughout the smoke.  If you prefer a mild to medium cigar, this is an excellent choice.  However, I’d recommend the Silver Edition if you like more complexity and stronger flavors.
