Four Great Internet Coffee Companies

By Jesse | June 7, 2008 |

Since I’ve been introduced to really good coffee I’ve learned that most of the coffee you get at your grocery store, Starbucks and most other places is crap. While I can drink this stuff, it pales in comparison to some of the great coffee you can get from some online retailers. Typically I like to do lists of five, but since I’ve only done business with four of these that is all I can recommend.

Killer Beans Coffee

kblogosmall The Nicaraguan Knife Fight is the coffee that was my first foray into ordering coffee online and it is still my favorite. Jerry, the owner, is also an active member on many of the online cigar communities I frequent so that is how I got introduced to his coffee. I go through this coffee so quickly that I’ve considered springing for the 5lb bag. Read our guest review of the Nicaraguan Knife Fight Coffee. Killer Beans Website

Fidalgo Bay Coffee

seacoast_small This is one of the reasons I love Twitter. I’d never heard of this company, but some how I ended up following some of them on Twitter and they announced a contest where they gave away a free bag of coffee. A few days later I got an email saying I’d won. The person who sent the email recommended the Seacost Blend so that is what I requested. I cracked the bag open this morning and I was impressed, this blend is great. Fidalgo Bay Website

Black Dog Coffee

bdc_light_logo This is another one I heard about through the online cigar communities and the Dog Watch Social Club Cigar Podcast. They also offer and subscription service of sorts where you can have some different coffees delivered each month. How can you not love a company where the owner names it after his faithful pet? Doi Chaang Coffee

DoiChaangCoffee This company is actually owned by Jerry from Killer Beans.Jerry is the US Agent for Doi Chaang Coffee. It features coffee from the Doi Chaang region of Thailand. Jerry originally sent me some of this coffee free to try out and see what I thought.

That was akin to a drug dealer offering the first hit for free. I’ve now got my wife and mother-in-law enjoying this coffee, the only problem is I’m the one that seems to be feeding their habit. I’ve thought about selling my body on the street to afford more, but bald, thirty-something, white guys just are not in high demand.

"Downright Funky" is how Jerry described this coffee to me and he’s right. It has a unique full bodied flavor that leaves you wanting more. Doi Chaang Coffee Website

If you like espresso, you should try <a href=”http://www.intelligentsiacoffe.com” Intelligentsia out of Chicago. Their Black Cat is just fantastic.

I agree with donkeypuncher, Intelligentsia makes great coffee. Quite a few cafes in Edmonton serve their espresso and it’s excellent.

I’d also recommend Kicking Horse Coffee out of BC. They have a variety of blends, and every type I’ve tried has been excellent.

As for the ones you’ve recommended, I’ll definitely think about trying them when I need more beans.

Nice of you guys to talk coffee & cigars. I started paring coffee with cigars when I was playing bass to Folsom Prison Blues in The Crown Hillbillies jug band a couple of years ago.

Strong specialty coffee really cuts through the smoke well. I like a cigar called Camacho 1962 that Jeff Jackson jjackson@cigar.com turned me onto a while back. I also go for the Gurkha which has a strange shape but nice smoking cigar.

Now for coffee–since I’m really a coffee guy–and VP of Sales at Fidalgo Bay Coffee. I suggest Nature’s Crest Espresso Blend. Buy it whole bean, grind it fine, and make it Melitta style with 4-tablespoons of beans per 1-cup (measuring cup) of boiling water and stir the coffee in the cone filter while you’re pouring it. This is the connoisseur’s way to make home brew coffee.

It will be strong–but I’m guessing that as a cigar aficionado you’ll appreciate a stout cup of joe.

Our coffees are super fancy–we import our green (raw coffee) through Royal Coffee out of Oakland–they are cupping champions and deal right at the boutique farm level to bring us back what we’re looking for. We also have one very special coffee that we deal directly with the farm on: Cafe Selvanica. We post roast it (roast it two ways) and then blend it. It makes a nice breakfast coffee and an amazing stove top espresso.

My point is that our coffees are the kind that you can brew and drink very strong like straight espresso for example and you will have a nice lingering taste that is not harsh.

Darryl, thanks for dropping by! The bag of Seacoast Blend I got isn’t going to last long. I’ll have to try the Nature’s Crest. 4 Tbps for one cup? Sounds like one heck of a wake up call! :)

    Hey Jesse,
Thanks so much for including me. I do own the Killer Beans and K. Dees Coffee line, but not the Doi Chaang.

I’m the U.S. agent for Doi Chaang and I sell these wonderful World Class beans not only online, but also in my coffee shop when the beans have been a big hit.

I hope everyone gives these beans a try, after the first cup you’ll understand why everyone involved with them is so proud to be able to offer them.
