ryjcedros I haven’t really had much of an opportunity to try out the Romeo Y Julieta line, which is odd considering how ubiquitous it is.  But I recently had a birthday and one of the nice side effects of being known as a cigar smoker is that I have a tendency to get lots of cigars as gifts.  This was a gift from my parents, and I was eager to try it out.

Construction: The cigar comes wrapped in cedar, which gives it a nice smell as well as adding some extra protection for the cigar itself.  Taking off the cedar reveals a beautiful, dark cigar, well constructed and with no soft spots.  The draw was slightly tighter than I like, but wasn’t too bad.

Burn: The burn was nice, slow, and tight, producing a dark grey ash that barely flaked at all.  Every puff, despite the slightly tight draw, produced lots of dark, grey smoke.  It burned evenly, and I never touched it up once.

Flavor: After initially lighting up, I didn’t notice any strong flavors, but there was an abundance of subtle ones—there was an undertone of spice, sweetness, and cedar—all sort of intermingled together without anything dominant.  After a few minutes, the cedar taste slowly became dominant, while the spice faded a little bit and the sweetness still underlying the smoke.

As the cigar moved into its second third, the cedar was still strong, but the spice moved back into the forefront and some hints of coffee started interplaying with the sweetness.  Then moving into the finish, the cedar moved back into the background, with the peppery spiciness becoming the dominant flavor while the sweet coffee notes still played on in the background.  As I got to the end, the cigar never got harsh and remained smooth throughout.

Verdict: The Cedros No. 2 was definitely a good introduction to the Romeo Y Julieta line.  The cigar was well constructed and I really enjoyed the different interplays of flavor that traveled through the length of the cigar.  I’ll definitely be smoking more of these.

I wish my friends and family would buy me cigars as gifts. Most of them seem to think that I’m going to get lung cancer and die, no matter how much I try to explain that cigars are not the same as cigarettes.

Great review. I wonder how much the Dominican Romeo y Julieta line differs from the Cuban one, which I’m a great fan of.

these are actually one of my favorite cigars. when i first started smoking these things i wasnt the biggest fan. just didnt like the flavor. but since my girlfriends dad has a thing for these, i got to smoke them quite often. The more i smoked these things the better they got. Maybe my palette developed a little more or maybe it just got used to them. either way, it is truly a great cigar.
