I first tried this cigar a few months ago when I got it in a sampler. Every once and awhile I’d pick up a couple meaning to review them, but I’d always end up smoking them without writing up a review. Well this weekend I picked up a few of them and decided I can’t smoke anything else until I finally get this review written. The Cuvée line is made by Cusano Cigars and takes its name from the highest proof of alcohol sold in the United States. It was intended to be released in 2007, but the Chiusanos were not happy with the blend so it was reblended and now readily available.
Construction: The Brazilian Maduro Wrapper is beautiful and has a slight oily sheen to it. It has a nice heft, and firm throughout the cigar. No obvious flaws in the construction and the draw is great.
Burn: The ash is dark great and held on fairly well. I only had it fall off in my lap once and that was because I accidently bumped it against something. The burn is very good; it only got uneven a bit in the final third, probably because I let it go out.
Flavor: The base is definitely wood and smoke has a real heavy cream texture to it. Once it warms up some really nice spice comes out. A bitter cocoa flavor comes out nicely in the second third and hangs around until the end. Definitely paired up well with the Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon I was drinking with it. Some fuller flavored cigars can get a bit harsh, but even though the spice picked up in the final third it never became what I’d consider harsh.
Verdict: A good cigar at the price point, full flavored and it isn’t so strong that it will leave your head spinning. I’d definitely pick up a few singles and probably pick up a box down the road. If you like the CAO Brazilia I think this will be right up your alley.
