Rocky Patel Old World Reserve Corojo Cigar Review

I wasn’t quite sure how to introduce this line—after all, who in the Cigar world hasn’t heard of Rocky Patel?  Turns out this was solved for me when I stopped by my local cigar shop last week, and who did I run into but—Rocky Patel!  I shook his hand and mentioned to him that this was my favorite cigar in his line.  Turns out, he agrees with me.  I don’t know what better testimony you can get than that.

Construction:
Like all cigars in this line, the construction on this cigar is beautiful, a little veiny but with no soft spots.  After I clipped it, the pre-light draw was easy, and already contained some pepper notes.

Burn:
Like the pre-light, the draw after the burn was easy and produced lots of light gray smoke.  The ash was nice and tight, with hardly any flaking.  The burn was a little uneven at first, but righted itself pretty quickly.

Flavor:
I’ve read a lot of cigar reviews where the flavor of a cigar was described as creamy, but I’ve never actually gotten the same flavor.  That was corrected on the initial puff on this cigar, which had a nice, creamy feel to it.  The flavors were that of caramel notes—kind of like hot caramel sauce on ice cream—with some underlying notes of pepper.  That sounds a little weird, but trust me—it works.

After the initial puff, the flavor stayed nice and creamy.  The caramel subsided a bit while the flavors got a little spicier, with notes of pepper and paprika.  As the smoke progressed, the caramel and pepper notes were still there, as well as some toasted wood notes.  As the cigar transitioned to the last third, the flavor got spicier, although it was still very smooth.  The wood notes diminished, but the caramel notes were joined by some coffee an cinnamon notes.  These flavors remained to the finish, where they were augmented by a big peppery blast to close out the smoke.

Verdict:
I’ve had a few of these now, and I can easily say that this is in my top five favorite cigars.  It’s nice and smooth with a lot of flavor and complexity.  Highly recommended.
