Cigar Review: Dona Flor Selecao Robusto
By Jesse | August 25, 2008 |
Company: Cigars of Brazil
Line: Dona Flor Selecao
Vitola: Robusto 5 x 50
Origin: Brazil
Wrapper: Brazil
Binder: Brazil
Filler: Brazil
Flavor: Medium-Full
Strength: Medium
Another Cigar I picked up while at the IPCPR Tradeshow in Las Vegas. This cigar has been on my must try again list ever since I’d gotten my hands on one over a year ago. The Selecao got a 92 rating in Cigar Aficionado so it could get even harder to find.
Construction: The first thing you’ll notice about these cigars is they tend to be on the softer side. This is intentional and they people I’ve spoken with suggest you use a punch on these cigars. Unfortunately I’ve misplaced my punch cutter. Nice looking cigar with a nice rich dark brown wrapper.
Burn: The burn was really nice on the two I tried. The ash taps of easy, but isn’t flaky. You get nice heavy mouthful of smoke with very little effort.
Flavor: This was a hard cigar to pin down; it hits you with a bunch of flavors all at once. I picked up oak and maybe a slight coffee flavor. Cocoa and a strong spiciness come on quick. The spice lingers on the finish along with chocolate notes, a very pleasant mix. I almost would call this a full flavored cigar, but even with the amount of spice I was picked up it was very easy to smoke.
Verdict: This is a cigar worth doing a bit of searching to get your hands on. Unfortunately I could not find a single online vendor that had them in stock. Let me know if you find them somewhere, I’d love to get my hands on a few more.

Jesse,
I agree completely with your review. I always have a hard time pinning down the exact tastes of Dona Flor Brazillian puros. I was relieved that quality did not suffer with the “New” Dona Flor factories. I’d even venture to say, the quality is a little better then before.

I remember liking this one more than I did a previous sample I had. They only problem seems to be getting your hands on the things.

Interesting review. I too have one of these sitting around from the IPCPR that I’ve been meaning to smoke. I’ve been very impressed with the Don Flor cigars I’ve had before.
One thing that I am a little unclear about is their various lines:
How does the Selecao differ from the Reserva Especial?
And where does the Alonso Menendez fit in? I was told that it was being re-branded as the Alonso Menendez by Dona Flor, but I haven’t seen it.
Jesse- any ideas?
