10 Whisky Facts

By Jesse | October 13, 2008 |

I’m not a big fan of beer in the first place and always preferred spirits or wine. I bet I’m probably not the only one that feels clueless when staring at all the bottles on the shelf fearing to shell out anywhere from $20 to $100 on a bottle of something I might not like.

I can across this article on FoodVu that takes a look at some of the things you should know when moving from Beer to Whisky. A quick and dirty primer to help you get started.

i would think that party source would have whisky tastings. now, whether that’s bourbon, scotch or just regular ‘ol whiskey can make a difference on what it is that you’re drinking.

once i get back to the US, i fully intend on furthering my fledgling knowledge of whisky - where better to learn about scotch than in scotland, after all?

also, one thing that the article doesn’t mention is that some people believe that adding equal parts water to scotch is better, making the liquor “bloom” and you can really taste more of the subtle nuances of scotch that you wouldn’t if you were drinking straight or with ice.

I’ve been drinking the brown stuff for a while, but I did pick up one new thing from reading the list — if you are going to buy a really old whisky don’t get anything older than the teenage years. Jailbait!

My favorite of all time (which I can rarely afford) is Balvennie double barrel. It has been aged in whisky oak casks and then moved to casks that held sherry. Has more than just the corn sweetness you get from Tennessee.

Very interesting article, I don’t know how I skipped this one at first in my reader!

I’m new to the fine beverages to go with the cigars. I haven’t tried any “infused” cigars preferring to try out all the natural wonders first. I’m also not traditionally someone who likes whiskey (preferring rum, tequila, and vodka).

Anyone got any suggestions to pair with something popular?

I always like beer, but I generally drink water with my cigars. I guess I’m just a creature of habit.
