These have been sitting in my humidor for a couple of weeks as I waited to get some time to smoke these two back to back. Punch has a package of two cigars, Candidate A and Candidate B. You smoke them, send in a card and let them know which one you like better. Both cigars are Nicaraguan Blend and both Toros.
Tasting Notes:
Candidate A: The cigar is definitely medium body. Definitely has a smoothness to it an lingers in the mouth. Doesn’t have that typical flavor you get in a Punch Cigar which reminds me of Dark Cherry. This one is more wood, coffee and a hint of mushroom that smoothes it out.
Candidate B: Also medium bodied but it is less complex and a little harsher. This one is woodiness and coffee and none of the smoothness of the first. Still not a bad smoke though.
Verdict:
My vote goes to Candidate A, but honestly I think that they could have done better. Look at all the stellar cigars coming out of Nicaragua right now these are decent, but mediocre at best. I have to say I really do like this idea though. I’d like to see more companies do something like this.

Hoyo did this a few years back and the loser ended up a decade later as part of JR’s Luxury line – and they are fabulous.
This is a cool idea. I wish I had know about it and was able to get in on it. I’d like to see mfg.’s do more of this.
Didn’t Punch do this themselves to come up with Champion reblend?
