Mojito Advice

by Jesse on June 2, 2010

The Mojito is my favorite summer drink by far, but I think we can all agree they are a bit of a hassle to make. I might make one or two before I just give up and start pouring rum over ice. I was wondering if anyone has tried making them by the pitcher or some other way for when you have a larger crowd?

I’ve honestly never seen them made anyway other than individually. I’m sure it could be done in a pitcher—you’d just have to mull more mint at once—but I’ve never seen it done.

I haven’t made them in bulk yet, but that’s on the list to do for this summer. We had a “Miami-inspired” party last Summer and I learned 2 things that did make life a little easier. The first, juice a lot of limes in advance and dice them to throw in the glass after muddling the mint. I used to hand squeeze each lime for each mojito, ugh! The second, make a simple syrup earlier that morning before the crowd arrives. I insisted on using pure sugar instead originally but the syrup is just the way to go for crowds. My local Fresh Market carries sugar cane stalks (about 5ft tall) and I’ll buy those and chop them the morning before the party as well and use them as garnish (maybe I’m crazy, haha). Lastly, use a sparking water like Perrier instead of club soda, it has a cleaner taste.

My plan for this summer is to mix a batch of simple syrup, lime juice and rum in a pitcher, then still muddle the mint individually and top off with the water since I think those steps should be done separately. Considering how fast they go anyway, the lime/rum/syrup should stand up well in a pitcher together.

After having mojitos in Miami I was hooked, now I even grow my own mint each year just so I can have it fresh on hand!

Also, I can see that you guys are cigar experts and would be much obliged if you could tell me whether this post is on point or not. I am just trying to get the hang of picking out a cigar!
