Friday Challenge: Size Does Matter

by Jesse on July 30, 2010

Do you have a specific vitola that you always buy? Then you might be missing out. So I challenge you this weekend to buy a cigar you enjoy in the size you usually buy it in and in one of the two extremes. If you prefer Churchills I want you to smoke a lancero or corona. If you like coronas try something on the larger end.

Take some notes and let us know the difference in how the cigar smokes and the flavor changes because of the difference in size. Please add your thoughts in the comments.

Update: Well I took my own challenge this evening with the Origen by J. Fuego. Since my palate is a bit shot tonight I found the lancero more enjoyable.

This is a great challenge for your readers. Changing up sizes can definitely help to push the boundaries of your palette and interests. My personal favorite experiment is trying a lancero counterpart of a favored high ring gauge cigar to really experience the wrapper contributions.

*shameless plug* There are a few posts about lanceros vs robustos on the blog of the leaf http://botl.cigarseveryday.com/tag/size-comparison/ */shameless plug*

I haven’t decided yet on what I’m going to do. I was leaning to maybe the Origen Torpedo and Lancero. But LFD and Pepin also make fantastic lanceros. Decisions…. Decisions.

It’s amazing how different vitolas of the same cigar have a completely different flavor profile. I had an VSG yesterday that was smaller and tightly box pressed. Normally the VSG is on of my favorite smokes. I really didn’t enjoy that one like usual. I usually stick to Robusto sized smokes because the size feels right in my hand. Smaller vitolas usually burn too hot for me and bigger ring sizes just feel too big in my mouth. I do switch it around every once in a while and am sometimes pleasantly surprised.
