I Hate Shaving

by Jesse on August 9, 2010

Well after being on vacation for a week and avoiding the razor for a little over a week I’m not looking forward to ripping my face off. I’ve been using a Gillette Fusion for awhile and find it an acceptable razor, though cleaning the thing is a pain. Since I’d like to shave my head and face daily I’ve been trying to find something better. Anyone got a razor they absolutely love?

Merkur HD, though an excellent shave is more about a good cream and brush than the razor itself.

or mantic59′s videos on youtube

Suffer no more. There’s lots of good info out there. The nearly-lost art of a proper shave is a secret no longer.

Amen, brother.

Learn to shave properly, and you’ll never regret it. My kids sit on the counter and watch me shave, spellbound.

I saw this on CNBC one day, looks like it should work well on the dome piece.

I have one of those. It is okay but I tend to nick my head with it. I also don’t like buying blades for two different razors. Ugh, is it possible to get razor burn by just thinking about shaving?

I couldn’t agree more with Jeff C. It takes some time to get used to and is a totally different experience than todays razors but when you get it right, there is no better shave. I have been using a Merkur for a year now and will never go back. It is expensive to get started but once you have everything it is much cheaper to replace blades and the soaps last forever too.

I’ll have to check this out. Since you both seem so high on it. :)

I’m using a Gillette Fusion Proglide, on the rare occasion I use one lately.

It is less about the razor, and more about the process. You could get a classic safety razor, but it is very painful until you figure it out, and let’s face it- new technology is here to help us out. Purchase any cartridge razor , but get a good brush and shaving soap. The brush helps the hairs to stand up, and the good shaving soap keeps them standing up.

You should also think about switching from a hot shave process to a cold shave process. Heat swells the pores, cold constricts the pores. The constricted pores make the hair stand up further, tightens the skin (which you want for shaving), and leaves your face feeling, well, cool.

Once you are at this point, let the razor do the work. Razor burn is achieved by pressing down on the razor during shaving, removing a layer of live skin. It is much like rug burn. Do not press down on the razor, just pull it with the grain.

If you regularly shave your face once a day, you should replace the razor cartridge once a week. Since you are adding your head to the mix, I would replace it every three days. A bit more cost, but a much happier face.

Gotta agree. I have the HD as well. Merkur is a great blade.

I use the Fusion, as well. I just spent two weeks in the hospital without shaving so I feel your pain! I used my beard trimmer to get most of the growth off before trying the razor. I understand the new incarnation of the Fusion is supposed to be pretty good. Sorry, I’m ditzy and can’t remember its name….

Shaving is really time consuming especially if it grows after a day or two…
